A weekend, IIUM Kuantan and 40 Hadith of Nawawi

Monday, November 18, 2013

On 16 and 17 of November 2013, an intensive course on 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi was held at IIUM Kuantan Campus. Syeikh Husni Ginting Al-Langkati (of Langkat) Al Azhari (who studied at Al Azhar) is the invited syeikh. It is a privilege for me to attend the course. My school friend, Ejad spent brief time attending the course with me on the second day.

40 Hadith
It is narrated that the Prophet had said on the benefits and rewards of memorizing 40 hadith. It is agreed by jumhur (majority) Muhaddithin (those who are learned in hadith) that those hadith(s) are dhaif (weak). Nevertheless, it is also agreed that it is permitted to rely on hadith dhaif in the matter of fadhail amal (narration on benefits or advantages of specific deed). Thus it has been a tradition, pioneered by Abdullah Ibn Mubarak in compiling 40 hadith, followed by other muhaddithin.

Imam Nawawi or his real name is Yahya Ibn Sharaf, a great Shafie scholar in fiqh and hadith compiled his 40 hadith, comprising of hadith on belief, pillars of Islam, principle on permitted and prohibition in Islam, manners (adab), wisdoms and many more. Though it is called 40 Hadith of Nawawi, the book contained 42 hadith.

My story on 40 Hadith
I learnt most of the hadith contained in the aforesaid book at high school (the syllabus is imported from Al Azhar, Egypt). I had the honour of teaching 40 hadith to the new brethren (muallaf) at Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (JAWI) Putrajaya in 2012. It doesn’t stop me from reading it again and this time, it is more special as the one who teaches us is Syeikh Husni. At the end of the majlis, he presented us with ijazah (sort of affirmation and authority) that we had listened to those hadith from him, together with sanad (chain of narrators) which cites each and every name of narrators until it reaches Imam Nawawi.

Something which excites me more this time is that one of the narrators is Almarhum Syeikh Ahmad Yasin Bin Isa Al Fadani. Origin of his family is Padang, Indonesia. He studied in Makkah, Saudi Arabia and rose as one of a leading muhaddith of the world in his time. He is nicknamed as “Musnid Ad Dunya” – "the one who possessed most of chain of narrations of hadith in this world", as he met great number of muhaddith and got sanad (chains of narration) from them. Among his student is former Syeikhul Azhar Dr Ali Jum’ah, and a great professor Syeikh Prof Dr Muhammad Sayyid Al Maliki of Makkah, thus his stature needs no further elaboration. I consider him as the most successful and influential Malay in Islamic world, specifically on discipline of hadith. It came to my knowledge that our Ustaz Abdullah Ridwan of Sekolah Izzuddin Shah, Perak is one of Syeikh Yassin’s students, so we were related to Syeikh Yassin long before his name and greatness reach us.

May Allah bless all of us for our love of listening to the words of Prophet SAW.
